On the example of our blue book of the Cultural Legacy of Uzbekistan in the World Collections series, we tell what elements the book consists of. What are their names? What are they for? Let's figure it out.
Binding
What begins with the book is a strong, usually hard cover made of cardboard, paper or other materials, into which the pages of the book are inserted. A simpler cover made of paper or thin cardboard is called a cover. The name of the publication and the author's name are printed on the front side and a picture is placed.
Back
The edge of a book block that holds the entire book elements of the book block together. The basic information about the edition and other elements are applied to the back of the binding cover:
1. Band - raised portions.
2. Sticker - a small block with the title of the book/author.
3. Vignette - decorative stamping.
Bead
Above and below the back of the block is decorated with a bead - a ribbon with a thickened colored edge, which is glued to the ends of the spine and also serves to strengthen the book.
Book block
Consists of sheets fastened together in the back and cut off on three sides. A book is considered to be all editions of 48 pages.
Flyleaf
A double sheet of paper that connects the book block and the bound cover. It can be clean or it can contain a drawing that conveys the atmosphere of the work - usually an object, landscape or ornamental pattern.
Title page
The first page of the book, on which its title, author's name, publisher and year of publication are printed, that is, the most important information.
Folio
Page serial number.
Endpaper
The same as the flyleaf, only at the end of the book. It attaches the book block to the back of the bound cover. It usually does not differ from the flyleaf.
Laset
Ribbon bookmark attached to the top of the back.
