Introduction to the cultural heritage of Uzbekistan in London auction houses

Representatives of the delegation headed by the Chairman of the World Society for the Study, Preservation and Popularization of the Cultural Heritage of Uzbekistan, Head of the Center of Islamic Civilization in Uzbekistan, F. Abdukhalikov, visited the Christie's and Sotheby's auction houses in London.

 

During the visit, Sara Plambley, head of the Islamic and Indian Arts department at Christie's auction house, briefly introduced the organization's history and activities. He provided information about a number of rare exhibits and works of fine art available at the organization. This auction house houses the work "Khamsa," the dastan "Shams and Mushtari," created under the influence of the literary art of the Timurid era, as well as manuscripts of Ferdowsi's "Shahnameh," Nizami Ganjavi's "Khamsa," and Hafizi Abru's "Majma ut-tawarikh."

 

For information, Christie's auction house was founded in 1766 by English collector James Christie. Today, the Christie's auction house is owned by French billionaire François Pino. Representative offices of this auction house are located in such large cities as Paris, Milan, Moscow, New York.

 

After that, the delegation members visited another auction house in London - Sotheby's auction house. The delegation was accompanied by Benedict Carter, head of the Sotheby's auction sales department, and Maryam Farhadi, a representative of the trading house. The guests from Uzbekistan will see the collection of Sogdian clothing from the 8th century, ceramic vessels from the Samanid period, a silver jug from the Karakhanid period, tiles from ancient buildings, manuscripts of the Holy Quran, believed to have been copied during the Mamluk, Abbasid, Ilkhanid, and Timurid periods, examples of carpet weaving and embroidery created two or three centuries ago in Uzbekistan, and the Babur period.

 

For information, the Sotheby's auction house is the largest trading organization operating in this direction. This trading house was founded in London in 1744 by the bookseller Samuel Baker. Currently, the head office of this company, which has branches in more than 10 countries of the world, is located in New York.
