Mount Mug reveals the secrets of the ancient Sogdians

Documents from Mount Mug represent a unique source of information about the complex and dynamic history of the Central Asian Mesopotamia in the early Middle Ages, especially in the context of the struggle against the Arab conquest. These finds, consisting of 76 documents, mostly of Sogdian origin, provide insight into the social, economic and cultural aspects of life in the region during this period.

Among the documents, the report of the emissary Fatufarna to the ruler of Sogd Devakhshtich stands out, which emphasizes the importance of diplomatic relations and alliances between different regions to counter external threats. This document illustrates not only the political situation, but also the level of interaction between different ethnic groups and state entities of that time.

The materials on which the documents were written - leather, wood and Chinese paper - testify to the high level of material culture and trade relations of Sogd with neighboring regions. The variety of document types - from private letters to business records - gives an idea of the daily life of the Sogdians, their economic activity and social structure. You can learn more about the topic in the book-album "Cultural Heritage of Uzbekistan. Collection of the Institute of Oriental Manuscripts of the Russian Academy of Sciences".

The general sponsor of the project is the oilfield services company Eriell-Group.
