We know some important facts about Ulugbek's patronage, who died in 1449. Born in 1394 in Sultanaya (Iran), he was the son of Shahrukh and grandson of Timur. At a very young age, in 1409, he became the ruler of Samarkand, and from 1411, of all of Mawarannahr. Even before building the rasad-khana (observatory), he founded the famous madrasa in Samarkand in 1417–1420. Ulugbek was a very educated man, a poet, a calligrapher, an admirer of mathematics and natural sciences, a patron of scientists, artists, and writers. We also know some writings dedicated to Ulugbek, such as "Miftah al-hisab" ("Key to Calculation") by Ghiyas al-Din Jamshid Kashani (1427; kept in the Russian National Library), "Ansab-i Mahmudi" ("Mahmud's Genealogy") by Sakhhaf Ramaki, a treatise on architecture and geometry with drawings by Abu-l-Wafa Buzjani; "Sharh Mujiz" ("Commentary on the "Abridgment of the Canon of Ibn Sina"), written by his physician Burhan al-Din Ibn Nafis Kirmani in Samarkand in 841/1436. But many works remain undiscovered to this day.
You can learn more about the topic in the book-album "Illustrated manuscripts from Mawarannahr in the collections of France" (Volume XXIX) in the series "The Cultural Legacy of Uzbekistan".
